His mood swings throughout their date shows that he is troubled and his expansive need for love is a counterbalanced by his unfitness to deal with the real world. Finally, in the ratiocination chapters of the book in that respect is a moment where Holden thinks that he is loss to leave and comprise on his own, but he notices the mental picture it would stool on Phoebe and he decides to stay. After that moment, she returns the hat Holden gave her reciprocating his question of kindness.
